Work Schedule
7:00 am - 4:00 pm; Monday - Friday with required shifts outside of the traditional shift working hours supporting special events such as Football games, Commencement ceremonies, chartered transportation and other PaTS-supported functions.
This position is designated as mandatory. The incumbent is expected to use sound judgment with respect to maintaining personal safety given their individual circumstances, but also to make a substantial and good-faith effort to reach the work site in a timely manner when adverse weather or other conditions affect normal campus operations.
Primary Purpose of Position
The incumbent will serve as part of the Transportation unit within the Parking and Transportation Services department. This position will help support Niner Paratransit, a point-to-point disability transportation service for eligible program members, including students, faculty, staff and University guests. The incumbent will receive and follow scheduled and on-demand transfer requests, in coordination with an on-duty supervisor or dispatcher, to safely and efficiently transport persons with disabilities to and from class, dorms, dining halls, parking lots and decks, and other locations on campus.
Other responsibilities include monitoring and supporting Niner Transit, scooter/bike/car-sharing services, bicycle lockers, bus shelters, chartered and special event transportation, bus advertising and performing other duties as assigned by the Assistant Director for Transportation or their designee.
Minimum Education/Experience
Required Minimum Qualifications:
Sufficient experience to operate assigned vehicles or equipment.
University Preferred Qualifications:
Sufficient experience (usually at least six months) to operate effectively the machine to which assigned. Driver's license may be required.

Essential Job Duties
- Maintain a valid North/South Carolina driver's license with appropriate classification and endorsement for each vehicle type operated.
- Safely, skillfully, and professionally operate vehicles supporting paratransit, charter, and route operations, including, but not limited to, effective space management, observing and obeying posted speed limits, yielding the right-of-way, adjusting operation of any vehicle to a safe level based on road, driver, weather, vehicle, and visibility conditions.
- Maintain sufficient knowledge of University policies and federal and State regulations as they relate to passenger-carrying vehicles supporting public service.
- Utilize two-way radios with proper radio language (10-codes).
- Immediately report all accidents, incidents, and injuries to appropriate supervisory staff.
- Prepare logs and reports legibly and completely, as required.
- Exhibit basic computer knowledge to enter, edit, review, and submit information into necessary programs in support of dispatch operations.
- Provide courteous and positive customer-service experiences to students, faculty, staff, and University guests through all interactions and supported services.
- Communicate professionally and respectfully with all customers, internal and external; identify concerns that may negatively impact a customer's experience and report to appropriate supervisory staff.
- Provide assistance, alternatives, direction, and/or solutions to all customers with concerns and/or complaints to ensure they are appropriately handled.
- Maintain sufficient knowledge and ability to effectively communicate and interact with persons with disabilities as defined by the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).
- Perform routine pre/post-trip vehicle inspections, identifying both the condition and operational capacity of all vehicle systems.
- Report to designated ADA pick-up and drop-off locations
- Check fuel levels, tires, wiper blades, lights, audible and visual vehicle warning systems, ADA lift/ramp and accessory components, independently perform routine pre/post-trip vehicle inspections, etc.
- Identify and document vehicle defects on associated paperwork (DVIR, Vehicle Usage Log, etc.).
- Immediately report all critical safety concerns to the appropriate supervisory staff.
- Deliver and pick up vehicles to/from automotive service facilities as directed by supervisory staff.
- Effectively manage time and resources as they relate to supported programs; prioritize responsibilities to effectively address most immediate needs first.
- Maintain flexibility, organization, and dedication to supported programs; demonstrate initiative and remain productive throughout your workday.
- Demonstrate sufficient attention to detail with record keeping, communication, and safe operation of vehicles.
- Properly secure mobility device aids (wheelchairs, walkers, etc.) for disability transportation program members in vehicles with appropriate tie-down restraints.
- Complete mandatory emergency preparedness and response training as directed by the University and department leadership, including, but not limited to, threat and hazard identification, communications procedures, and adverse weather procedures.
- Participate in professional development opportunities such as supervisor-directed training, conferences, and webinars.
- Report to work during adverse weather conditions as directed by PaTS leadership or University guidance.
- Provide chartered transportation as scheduled by supervisory staff.
- Monitor the University's transit operation and provide feedback to PaTS supervisors regarding service levels, cleanliness, and vehicle condition.
- Assist with the bus advertisement program by inspecting and installing/removing bus ads as directed.
- Monitor, inspect, and clean bus shelters, bike lockers, and other PaTS-owned equipment to ensure University standards are upheld.
- Monitor and inspect the University's car/bike/scooter-sharing programs and identify devices/vehicles that are improperly placed on campus, such as blocking accessible pathways, and relocate devices to a proper hub. Report incidences to supervisory staff.
- Monitor PaTS signage around campus to ensure information is present and in good condition.
- Enter, edit, review, and submit information into necessary computer programs in support of dispatch operations.
- Develop and foster working relationships with co-workers and campus partners to effectively support Transportation programs and University-supported initiatives.
- Provide courteous and positive customer-service experiences to students, faculty, staff, and University guests through all interactions and supported services.
- Independently identify concerns that may negatively impact a customer's experience and report to appropriate supervisory staff.
- Participate in new student and family informational sessions to advocate for PaTS programs and services.
- Support special events such as Football games, Commencement, the Transportation Fair and other University-hosted events that may fall outside of your traditional work schedule.
- Report vehicle defects to the supervisor and document them on the Driver/Vehicle Inspection Report (DVIR)
- Deliver and pick-up vehicles to/from automotive service facilities as directed by supervisory staff.
- Investigate and identify vehicle issues during standard operations and report specific information to the on-duty supervisor for a quick and effective resolution.
- Monitor email and driver's mailbox on a daily basis and respond accordingly
- Access and print the driver paperwork for your shift and review schedule information for updated passenger transfer information, prepare and complete paperwork, logs, and records legibly and completely, as required.
- Access appropriate vehicle keys from the key box and sign the vehicle out on the Vehicle Activity board.
- Coordinate with the supervisory team to facilitate supply deliveries on campus.
- Demonstrate initiative by working ahead and completing all required University and departmental training before the due dates.
- Attend quarterly driver safety meetings
- Other duties as assigned by the Assistant Director for Transportation or their designee.
- 2 years of customer service and professional driving experience needed for position.
- Familiarity with university policies and procedures; 1 or more years of experience preferred.
- Experience transporting people with disabilities and familiarity with ADA regulations.
- Valid, state-issued Commercial Driver License, class A or B, with Passenger endorsement; preferred.
- Experience with utilizing two-way radios with proper radio language (10-codes) preferred.
- Valid DOT Medical Card preferred.
- Knowledge and experience of Microsoft and Google Suite.
- Strong attention to detail necessary for position.
