SUMMARY
Responsible for driving mini bus to and from a variety of schools throughout IPS transporting students with severe disabilities and accompanying staff to and from schools and community locations. Provides supervision and/or support to students with severe disabilities at various community locations.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
Follows schedule as assigned by special education department supervisor for all community locations.
Operates assigned mini bus, observing all safety regulations and traffic laws. Attends IPS transportation division training as required. Inspects appropriate emergency equipment on bus to ensure good working order.
Performs preventive maintenance checks, completes and maintains pre-trip inspection log before each run and reports defects to proper authority. Keeps assigned bus clean.
Maintains student discipline on bus, enforces regulations for student behavior, and reports undisciplined students to principal and supervisor.
Maintains schedule as assigned by the special education department transporting only authorized students and staff members.
Maintains radio contact with transportation dispatcher at all times while driving. Reports all accidents immediately and completes accident reports as required.
Is responsible for assisting students in boarding/exiting bus, operating mechanical lift, transferring student from wheelchair to bus seat, assisting with harnesses, seatbelts, etc.
Assists students with severe disabilities with personal care issues including toileting, wheelchair transfers, and eating.
Accompanies students and staff to community locations and job sites.
Assures all appropriate restraint devices/systems are on bus to meet student needs and maintained in proper working order.
Responsible for complying with rules, regulations, and directions of the state of Indiana, Indiana State Police, and the Board of School Commissioners concerning pupil transportation and policies.
Holds and maintains a valid Indiana Public Passenger Chauffeur's License, a current physical for the license and an Indiana state school bus committee certification.

QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
High school graduate. Training in the area of special education, transportation safety, and/or related area preferred. Mini-bus or larger public vehicle experience preferred.
LANGUAGE SKILLS
Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos. Ability to write simple correspondence, record data. Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to students and staff of the organization.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS
Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
REASONING ABILITY
Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or lesson plan format. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations. Ability to deal with problems responsibly and effectively.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS
The ability to push a wheelchair
The ability to walk with students in/around school neighborhood, to bus stops, and in the community. The ability to interact with students, assist in a variety of therapeutic positions.
Participate in "2-person lifts" for students who weigh more than 90 lbs.
