Business Intelligence Specialist
Under general direction, provide database administration support, report development, and analytical support to the Office of Research. Member of a multi-function team supporting the processing of and reporting on data related to proposal and award management, research compliance and reporting, and other subjects managed by the Office of Research IT team. This data and reporting supports the Office of Research and the campus's institutional effectiveness, planning, decision making, and policy formation.
The incumbent will be responsible for working with team members supporting, designing, and implementing processes and procedures to acquire, process and store data into databases supporting the units reporting and integration needs. Responsible for assisting team with data analysis and dissemination of data in a usable and appropriate format for its intended use. Responsible for working with team members, business users, management and executive leadership to design and implement reports using a wide variety of technologies.
Advocate for and implement best practice approaches in data collection, data analysis, data governance and reporting. Advocate for standardization to achieve reduced complexity and increased efficiency for OR and the campus where needed and appropriate. Maintain system of documentation containing data dictionaries, design documentation, and technical documentation related to all work and data that is the responsibility of the unit. Maintain confidentiality with issues and materials reviewed and/or managed and exercise a high level of discretion and judgement in dealing effectively with all parties.
Work with team project management and supervisor to effectively manage project tasks and timelines. Research, prepare and present project information, the unit's work and other topics to clients via demonstrations, written documentation, and other methods.

Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications

  • Extensive experience performing quantitative data analysis for multiple audiences with different knowledge levels and business needs.
  • Extensive experience making use of relational databases and using standard features such as SQL, stored procedures, and functions to manage and prepare data as needed for reporting, data management or other needs.
  • Experience writing and deploying dashboards and reporting using Tableau
  • Knowledge and experience with MS-Office and related products - in particular Access and Excel. Experience creating reports that output to excel. Experience extracting and reporting on data from access databases, text files in a variety of formats including CSV. Experience using Microsoft's SSMS.
  • Analytical skills to extract, integrate, compile and analyze large data sets from diverse sources.
  • Writing editing and proofing skills to generate correspondence, documentation, reports and other documents that reflect the high standards and professionalism of the unit and Office of Research.
  • Organization and time management skills to coordinate multiple projects and tasks simultaneously in an environment where priorities and deadlines can and do change based on business priorities and needs.
Preferred Qualifications
  • 5 - 10 years of work experience demonstrating knowledge of quantitative research methods and technical skills developing and supporting business reporting for a large organization.
  • BS or higher degree in economics, mathematics, statistics, business or a related field.
  • Experience working at a large public research university, preferably within the context of grant management, compliance or other area related to research administration.
  • Experience interpreting campus policy and procedures governing research administration.
  • Experience with MS SQL Server such as job scheduling and execution, common table expressions (CTE), query optimization, T-SQL stored procedures and queries.
  • Experience writing and deploying jobs using Microsoft's SSIS or similar product.
  • Experience with a variety of relational database systems such as Oracle, MS SQL Server, Postgres, etc.
  • Experience with database systems such as MongoDB or other no-sql database.

Department Overview
The Office of Research (OR) is charged with advancing the research mission of the campus, which includes services and resources that enhance research and other creative endeavors, relationships with government and industry, policy compliance, and oversight of an infrastructure of organized research. The OR oversees over 22 organized research units, special research programs and projects, and central facilities with approximately 1,119 employees, $137 million in annual expenditures across multiple fund sources, and annual recharge income activity of $22 million. The OR also administers the campus' research support programs of approximately $2.7 million annually. The central administration units of OR (Business and Finance, Human Resources, Innovation Access, Institutional Review Board, Interdisciplinary Research Support, Marketing and Communications, OR Technology, Office of Corporate Relations, Research Compliance and Integrity and Sponsored Programs) are comprised of approximately 167 employees.
