QUALIFICATIONS
  • Must be at least 21 yearsof age or older.
  • Minimum High School diploma or equivalent. Required
  • Valid Driver's License with an F,S,V or A passenger endorsement or a CDL license with a P endorsement. Required.
  • Minimum 3 years professional driving experience with safe driving record and no moving violations within the past five years. Required
  • Experience working with persons with physical challenges or disabilities and with vehicles equipped with wheelchair transportation equipment. Required
  • Must possess exemplary communication, customer service and interpersonal skills and the ability to read, write and clearly understand written and verbal instructions. Required

  • JOB SUMMARY
  • This position provides for safe, reliable and timely transportation of patients and/or supplies using company vehicles. Patient transportation responsibilities include: coordinating transportation schedule, driving non-acute medically compromised patients and, if needed, any licensed staff to medical facilities and offices within in state of Connecticut; operation of vehicles equipped with wheelchair transportation lifts, tie down devices and occupant restraint systems; and supporting occasional requests for group trips, outings, or other special events on evenings or weekends. The driver also regularly supports the Materials Management Department as a supply associate for the satellite unit, and provides coverage for the courier as needed

  • Frequent vehicle operation with infrequent rest.
  • Frequent pushing and pulling up to 100 pounds.
  • Frequent lifting or carrying packages or equipment up to 40 pounds.

  • Frequent gross and fine hand manipulation and grasping with one or both hands
  • Ability to perform body mechanics associated with loading and securing of manual and powered wheelchairs in vehicles equipped with wheelchair transportation equipment

  • Remains calm in an emergency and under difficult or emotional situations while ensuring the safety of all passengers and the public. Follows set policies and procedures for reporting of motor vehicle accidents or vehicle breakdowns.
  • Demonstrates thorough knowledge of major and local roads and selects and utilizes the safest and most efficient routes available.
  • Able to work independently for long periods of time; requires minimal supervision.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills in order to interact and connect with diverse patient population

  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide and perform basic arithmetic operations involving American monetary units.

  • ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • Provides safe, timely and unsupervised transportation for patients, and assigned support staff, to designated locations. Maintains appropriate communication with clinical unit staff, drop-off, and receiving locations.
  • Coordinates daily transportation schedule to assure all patient transportation needs are met minimizing the need to incur unnecessary fiscal expenses for transportation services provided by non-affiliated businesses.
  • Ensures personal, passenger and public safety by performing pre-trip inspections of the vehicle and all occupant restraints or tie down devices. Immediately reports any potential or identified safety concerns or issues to the appropriate individuals using the proper channels so as to minimize equipment breakdowns or failures.
  • Consistently demonstrates proper techniques in boarding, dis-embarking and securing patients who use powered and non-powered wheelchairs using the various occupant restraint systems provided in each vehicle in accord with the manufacturer's recommendations and guidelines.
  • Obeys all motor vehicle traffic laws and follows organizational policies and procedures for operation of fleet vehicles and reporting of motor vehicle breakdowns or accidents.
  • Assumes and carries out the courier's responsibilities when the courier is absent or not available.
  • Supports Materials Management department by delivering and stocking medical supplies for the satellite unit per established schedules. and in other ways during periods when there is no patient transportation.
  • Performs any other related tasks, activities and responsibilities as assigned or requested for the purpose of completing department projects and maintenance duties within established time frames and in a safe efficient manner.
