IU Health Paoli has a Labor, Delivery, Recovery, and Postpartum (LDRP) model that allows the nurse to care for the family before, during, and after labor. We offer a full scope of services ranging from antenatal monitoring and unmedicated births to scheduled inductions, planned or unplanned surgical deliveries.

Obstetrics and gynecology nurses, also known as OB nurses, OB/GYN nurses, or perinatal nurses, are registered nurses who care for female patients during pregnancy, labor, and childbirth, as well as providing them with postpartum care. OB nurses play a vital role during this critical period during a women's life. They work closely alongside obstetricians, midwives, and nurse practitioners to provide much needed support to women as they transition into motherhood and experience a wide variety of emotional and physical changes.

Act as partners and advisors to assist and support patients and families to optimally manage their health care, respecting their culture and values, individual needs, health goals and treatment preferences.

Perform admitting assessments, review history, and develop plan of care.

Initiate fetal heart monitor, perform vaginal exams, interpret fetal heart tones, and determine frequency duration and intensity of contractions.

Monitor progress of laboring mothers, interpret fetal heart monitor and notify physician when appropriate for progress or problems.

Assist mother and labor coach with breathing exercises, pain management techniques and administer pain medication as ordered.

Prepare birthing room for delivery using strict sterile techniques.

Perform phone triage.

Provide birth control education.

Escorts patients to and from exam rooms and readies them for physicians.

Perform post-operative care on a surgical unit.

Perform cardiac monitoring (this is not frequent), non-stress test monitoring,

Administer medications via intravenous drip.

Assist obstetrician with pelvic exams, urine and blood sample collection, ultrasounds, and prenatal screenings.

Help to manage any pain that the expectant mother may be experiencing.

Educate patients on birth control options.

Clean, weigh, measure, vaccinate, and continuously monitor newborns.

When any complications during the pregnancy arise, assist expectant mothers to make hard decisions that will affect both their own as well as their baby's health

Shift: Nights: Full Time -3- Nights per week 4p-430a, Rotating Weekend and Holiday Rotation

The Clinical Nurse reflects the mission, vision, and values of Indiana University Health, adheres to the organization's Code of Ethics and Corporate Compliance, and complies with all relevant policies, procedures, guidelines and all other regulatory and accreditation standards. The registered professional clinical nurse (RN) is accountable and responsible for the provision and coordination of competent, evidence-based care along the care continuum, which includes assessment, diagnosis, outcome identification, planning, implementation, and evaluation. The clinical nurse participates in decision-making, teaching, mentoring, and collaboration with the multidisciplinary team to advance the patient plan of care, achieve outcomes and enhance operational efficiency. The nurse adheres to the ANA Scope and Standards of Professional Nursing and the Code of Ethics for Nurses with Interpretive Statements.

This position is referral eligible!

Requires an Associates of Nursing (ASN); Bachelor of Nursing (BSN) preferred.
Requires an active Registered Nurse (RN) license in the state of Indiana or an active Nurse Licensure Compact (NLC) RN license.
Requires that the RN has graduated from a nationally accredited nursing program.
Requires Basic Life Support certification through the AHA.
Other advanced Life Support certifications may be required per unit/department specialty according to patient care policies.
