Primary Purpose:
Communicating and mentoring bus drivers and monitors during route times and provide directives as required. Serve as a school bus driver or monitor when needed and assist with dispatch. Train and prepare employees to obtain Texas Commercial Driver's License. Assist with routing and training of transportation team in daily operations.
Qualifications:
Education/Certification:
High school diploma or equivalent
Clear and valid Texas Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with Passenger (P) and School Bus (S) endorsements
Valid Texas School Bus Driver Certification
Must pass school bus driver physical examination for physical and emotional stability
Acceptable motor vehicle record
Must be able to read, write, and speak English
Special Knowledge/Skill:
Knowledge of vehicle's operating characteristics
Ability to use and manage Student accountability software, along with Routing software on all district vehicles
Ability to communicate effectively with others both verbally and written
Problem solving abilities
Knowledge of road, subdivisions, and campuses within the district
Ability to manage student behavior
Ability to understand and carry our written and oral instructions
Ability to use maps and Global Positioning Systems (GPS) to follow routes and locate addresses
Ability to learn and use transportation software
Ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously
Ability to follow written and verbal instructions
Experience:
Three (3) years of successful bus driving experience, HCISD preferred
Major Responsibilities and Duties:
  1. Provide oversight and mentoring functions by performing all the duties of a bus driver and monitor.
  2. Monitor performance of assigned bus drivers and/or monitors to ensure routes, schedules, and safety procedures are consistently followed, and records are maintained. Monitor the completion and delivery of paperwork for assigned bus routes to ensure reports are turned in on time. Assist bus drivers and monitors to resolve issues that arise.
  3. Train new bus drivers to obtain their Commercial Driver's License. Assist with classroom instruction and/or monthly meetings and in-services.
  4. Perform pre- and post-trip inspections according to specifications to ensure bus can be operated safely and notify supervisor of needed repairs. Keep assigned bus clean and maintain appropriate fuel levels.
  5. Demonstrate the principles of first aid. First aid is the immediate and temporary care given to the victim of an accident or sudden illness until the service of a health professional can be obtained.
  6. Demonstrate proper responsibilities and techniques when serving the needs of Special Needs students in a special education services setting.
  7. Instruct students on safe entering, exiting, and passenger rules and regulations. Supervise students while they board and leave bus and cross the street.
  8. Provide VersaTrans routing of all students and production of route sheets, maps, stop indices, and all pertinent information on each route for regular school year, summer school and activity routes. Keep assigned routes updated and compose letters to parents for significant route changes.
  9. Mentor teams of drivers/monitors for designated schools to keep route products current and cost effective.
  10. Help prepare TEA route descriptions, mileage information, and monthly ridership data for state reporting.
  11. Provide backup assistance to the Regular and Special Needs team to provide continuity across the spectrum of bus transportation functions.
  12. Perform other duties as assigned.

Tools/Equipment Used: School bus and all related equipment, personal computer, designated transportation operations software programs, copier, adding machine, telephone, two-way radio, fax machine, TV VCR, and camera.
Posture: Bending, stooping, twisting, turning, pulling (20 lbs.), pushing, and extensive sitting.
Motion: Reaching, walking, climbing and repetitive motions.
Lifting: Lifting and carrying (50 lbs. for 5 feet).
Environment: Paperwork processing, outside, excessive heat, excessive cold, excessive humidity, excessive dampness or chilling, intermittent noise, fumes, wind, dust, seeing day and night vision, riding on rough road, bouncing, bus vibrations, and possibility of extended hours.
Mental demands: Maintain emotional control under stress.
