JOB TITLE: Sterilization Technician
REPORTS TO:
The following statements reflect the general duties, responsibilities and competencies considered necessary to perform the essential functions of the job and should not be considered as a detailed description of all the work requirements of this position.
POSITION SUMMARY:
The Sterilization Technician/Courier's main role is to successfully carry out the collection, processing, and sterilization of all surgical instruments and transport them to and from all HHLI health center locations. Follows proper procedure for biological monitoring of sterilizers as per regulatory and health center requirements. Responsible for daily review, compliance, and maintenance of all sterilization and biological monitoring records. Responsible for Sterility Assurance through the use of appropriate chemical and biological indicators and verification of sterilizer parameters.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Preparing medical equipment and instruments for decontamination
- Operating equipment to clean, disinfect and decontaminate surgical instruments, medical devices and equipment
- Inspecting instruments and equipment for signs of damage and wear and tear
- Unpacking, checking and stocking new equipment, instruments and devices
- Delivering equipment and supplies to all health center sites
- Responding to emergency supply requests during surgical procedures
- Maintaining records of sterilized instruments, equipment and supply maintenance, and sterilization procedures
- Monitoring temperature and humidity conditions within storage areas
- Packing and preparing decontamination equipment
- Monitoring sterilized equipment inventory
- Reporting any issues regarding the sterilized equipment and testing it before use
- Managing and maintaining sterilization supply inventory, checking expiration dates, and reordering supplies
- A High School diploma or GED
- Certificate in sterile processing and distribution.
- Extensive knowledge of the best practices for infection control, hazardous waste disposal
- The ability to work well under pressure
- Keen attentiveness to detail to monitor working conditions, inspect equipment and oversee the decontamination process
- Strong technical and problem solving skills
- Good critical thinking and judgment
- Ability to handle sensitive equipment
- Proof of up-to-date immunizations
- Ability to remain stationary and upright during a shift and to move items that weigh up to 25 pounds.
- 2 yrs. experience with ambulatory surgical sterilization process is a plus
- You must have the ability and willingness to regularly travel, if working in Nassau or Suffolk Counties, a valid New York, driver's license and clean driving record is required.
SALARY: Commensurate with experience
