A Registered Nurse (RN) in Labor and Delivery (L&D) plays a critical role in providing care to pregnant women during labor, childbirth, and the immediate postpartum period. The job responsibilities include:
RNs assess and monitor the mother's vital signs, contractions, and fetal heart rate to ensure both mother and baby are progressing safely through labor.
Nurses assist during labor, offering guidance and emotional support to the mother. They may administer medications, including pain relief options like epidurals, and help during natural or assisted deliveries.
L&D nurses work closely with obstetricians, midwives, anesthesiologists, and pediatricians to coordinate care during labor and respond to any complications.
After delivery, the RN provides care for both the mother and newborn, monitoring recovery, helping with breastfeeding, and educating the mother on newborn care.
L&D nurses must be prepared to respond to obstetric emergencies such as hemorrhage, fetal distress, or preeclampsia.
Accurate recording of patient information, interventions, and any changes in condition is essential.
Providing education to expectant mothers and their families about labor processes, postpartum care, and newborn care is a key part of the role.
