These duties are to be performed in a highly confidential manner, following the mission, values, and behaviors of Insight Hospital and Medical Center. Employees are further expected to provide a high quality of care, service, and kindness toward all patients, staff, physicians, volunteers, and guests.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities of the Labor and Delivery Nurse
- Taking vitals for the mother and baby.
- Assesses patient needs to determine care requirements- administering medications, monitoring contractions, identifying complications during labor and delivery.
- Ability to assess patients quickly, prioritize and assist in minor procedures.
- Provide education, advocacy, and care throughout the stages of childbirth.
- Assist and coach mothers throughout the duration of labor and delivery.
- Demonstrate sound decision making in emergency situations based on patient presentations, conditions, assessments and vital signs.
- Collaborate with laboratory personnel and report back lab findings to doctors.
- Expert knowledge of health and safety guidelines/ procedures (sanitation, decontamination etc.).
- Provide RN care for all patients, as well as handling of defibrillations, placing fetal monitors, blood transfusions, heplock insertions and more.
- Uses the nursing process, critical thinking skills, professional judgment, and the attributes of Careful Nursing to provide care for an assigned population of patients.
- Plans care and delegates tasks to ancillary personnel based on patient assessment.
- Evaluates patient response to care provided and makes changes in plan for care as needed.
- Promotes patient/family independence through provision of education related to patient's condition, treatment, medications and on-going self-care requirements.
- Participates in professional advancement by maintaining certifications and training.
- Demonstrates awareness of organizational values, mission and philosophy through interactions with physicians, patients and peers.
- Demonstrates basic ability to apply the nursing process (assessment, planning, implementation, evaluation and documentation).
- Functions independently within established protocols, policies and procedures.
- Seeks appropriate resources in a timely fashion.
- Demonstrates basic unit specific competencies.
- Meets productivity and quality standards for unit - able to care for an average workload.
- Demonstrates clear verbal and written communication skills.
- Plans and demonstrates appropriate delegation of duties and follow-up.
- Participates and documents client specific teaching and discharge planning.
- Assumes responsibility for professional education and development.
- Completes mandatory in-service requirements.
- Completes at least 8 hours of continuing education in addition to mandatory requirements within the last year that is specific to daily clinical practice.
- Verbalizes an understanding of the committee structure and function in the Department of Nursing and at the unit level.
- Coordinates discharge planning by identifying discharge needs, implementing/revising and communicating plan in collaboration with the patient/family/significant others.
- Discusses patient progress, problems and needs with physician and multidisciplinary team members on a regular basis to ensure that goals for discharge are met.
- Assures high levels of quality of care through compliance with regulatory standards, reference to current research related to patient care outcome and participation in the data collection and analysis process of ongoing quality monitoring.
- Uses supplies in a cost effective and efficient manner and works with the management team to make unit supply level adjustments, additions and revisions.
- Shifts are available for days and grave.
Qualifications:
- Graduate of an accredited school of nursing required.
- Current RN License in the State of Illinois required.
- Inpatient Obstetric Nursing (RNC-OB) certification through National Certification Corporation.
- Required to be NCC certified for fetal monitoring.
- Experience in inpatient Obstetric Nursing and labor surgeries.
- Current CPR certification required.
- BLS, ACLS and PALS certification required within one year.
- NRP certification required within the first year for Special Care Nursery.
- Ability to quickly recognize changes in condition and needs of patients.
- Knowledge of patients’ growth and development needs.
- Ability to maintain a high degree of accuracy in carrying out work duties.
