Description
Wilson County Solid Waste Services is seeking an experienced Truck Driver. This is a fulltime position with all applicable benefits. Salary range shown depends upon required certifications and is commensurate with experience and excellent benefits package available. Performs intermediate semiskilled work operating a refuse collection and transport truck, collecting municipal solid waste, trash and recyclables, changing containers and transporting refuse to disposal site, and related work as apparent or assigned. Work is performed under the moderate supervision of the Landfill Supervisor.

Description of Work
Operates a Tractor Trailer, Dump Truck, Frontload and Roll-Off Container Trucks to transfer refuse and debris from container sites to prescribed disposal areas. Operates hydraulic mechanisms for compressing and dumping refuse.
Hauls recyclable materials from Convenience Centers to recycling stations; hauls materials such as mulch, tires, electronics, cardboard, etc. for recycling.
Performs pre-trip inspections documenting fluids levels, tire pressures and conditions, lights, etc.; performs light preventative and general maintenance on vehicle; and cleans and gases vehicle.
Operates Heavy Equipment such as Front End Loader, Dump Truck, Trackhoe, Excavator, and Trash Compactors to perform general assignments at the Landfill including maintaining tire piles, loading mulch, and compacting trash.
Maintains records of mileage, fuel usage, number of loads hauled to the Landfill; and prepares periodic reports for submission to the supervisor.
Performs other related work as required.
Minimum Education and Experience
  • High school diploma or GED and moderate experience in the operation of automotive and heavy equipment, or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Valid Class B Commercial Driver's License issued by the State of North Carolina.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS OR STANDARDS REQUIRED TO PERFORM ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
Physical Requirements: Must be physically able to operate a variety of machinery and equipment including dual axle or heavy load capacity trucks, trash compactors, front end loaders, pitch forks, shovels, carpenter's tools, hand tools, calculators, etc. Must be able to operate motor vehicles. Must be able to exert up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 25 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Requires the ability to maintain body equilibrium when bending, stooping, crouching, climbing, reaching and/or stretching arms, legs, or other parts of body to grasp, push, pull or otherwise move objects. Physical requirements are for Medium Work.
Data Conception: Requires the ability to compare and/or judge the readily observable, functional, structural, or composite characteristics (whether similar or divergent from obvious standards) of data, people, or things.
Interpersonal Communication: Requires the ability to speak and/or signal people to convey or exchange information. Includes receiving instructions, assignments, or directions from superiors.
Language Ability: Requires the ability to read simple reports and forms. Requires the ability to prepare maintenance records, fuel tickets, forms, etc., using prescribed formats. Requires the ability to speak to people with poise, voice control, and confidence.
Intelligence: Requires the ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written oral instructions; to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in or from standardized situations.
Verbal Aptitude: Requires the ability to record and deliver information, to explain procedures, and to follow oral and written instructions. Must be able to communicate effectively and efficiently in standard English.
Numerical Aptitude: Requires the ability to utilize mathematical formulas; to add and subtract; to multiply and divide.
Form/Spatial Aptitude: Requires the ability to inspect items for proper length, width, and shape.
Motor Coordination: Requires the ability coordinate hands and eyes rapidly and accurately in using heavy motorized equipment.
Manual Dexterity: Requires the ability to handle a variety of items such as heavy motorized equipment. Must have minimal levels of eye/hand/foot coordination.
Color Discrimination : Requires the ability to differentiate between colors and shades of color.
Interpersonal Temperament: Requires the ability to deal with people beyond giving and receiving instructions. Must be adaptable to performing under stress and when confronted with persons acting under stress.
Physical Communication: Requires the ability to talk and hear: (Talking: expressing or exchanging ideas by means of spoken words. Hearing: perceiving nature of sounds by ear.) Must be able to communicate via telephone.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
Considerable knowledge of the operation of heavy trucks.
General knowledge of the hazards and applicable safety rules and precautions in the operation of heavy trucks.
Working knowledge of traffic laws, ordinances and regulations related to the solid waste disposal and operation of heavy trucks.
Working knowledge of the geography of the County.
Ability to operate heavy trucks skillfully, safely and in accordance with traffic laws and regulations.
Ability to clean and assist in minor repairs to heavy trucks and related heavy equipment.
Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
Ability to exercise tact and courtesy in contacts with the public.
Ability to perform physical labor required of the position.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships as necessitated by work assignments.
