As a Driver Mentor, you will be responsible for enhancing the training of new Company drivers for the purpose of creating a safe and productive work environment consistent with the Company's culture and policies. You will be responsible for running a daily Pick Up & Delivery (P&D) route, unless training a new driver or re-training a current driver. You will be the face of Southeastern Freight Lines, serving our customers on a regular basis.
Provide in-truck training with all newly hired drivers and Driver Trainees. Training includes, but is not limited to, proficiency training in the following areas: route management, stop management, daily driver responsibilities, Smith System of Defensive Driving, and injury prevention. Responsible for training newly hired drivers in the following areas: operation of In Cab mobile device, Laser System, Samsara logs, security, customer service, proper handling of a Bill of Lading (BOL) and Delivery Receipt (DR), call in procedures, lunch and delay times. Responsible for covering the following topics with new drivers: dress and appearance, when to clock in, check-in procedure at the beginning of the day, where to obtain needed supplies, trailer audit and pre-trip route planning, vehicle assignment, pre-trip inspection, yard rules, and yard layout for service center. Responsible for covering the duties associated with returning to the service center at the end of the day, to include the following: check-in procedure and door assignment, turning in bills, fueling the tractor, proper parking on yard and vehicle security, extra dispatches, handling of returned freight, post-trip inspection, and vehicle inspection report. Provide advice to new drivers and answers any questions the driver may have. Responsible for performing necessary check rides to ensure safe driving and procedural compliance. Assist with driver orientation, ELDT, and classroom training. Responsible for filling in for P&D leaders that are away from the office, as needed.
Candidates for this position must have a minimum of 6 months driving experience, though 2 years is preferred, and hold a High School Diploma or GED. A valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with endorsements for HAZMAT, Tanker, and Twin Trailers is essential, with no automatic restrictions. Applicants must be at least 21 years old and have the ability to read, comprehend, and write in English, perform simple mathematical calculations, handle receipts, read maps and road signs, and maintain driving logs. They must also have detailed knowledge of and comply with all Department of Transportation (DOT) rules, regulations, and guidelines, including those governing safe driving, hours of service, vehicle inspections, and the transportation of hazardous materials. Additionally, meeting DOT physical qualifications and passing alcohol and drug tests are mandatory requirements for this role.
