The Can Truck Driver operates a truck designed to pick up 8 yard and below dumpsters. The driver is dispatched to various locations within the division's service area to pick up full dumpsters and deliver empty dumpsters. This position does not require a CDL license.
Driver must operate truck in accordance with DOT Regulations, company policy, and in accordance with established standards for excellent customer service.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Drive a can truck to service customers on an as dispatched basis within the service area for special orders, and regular work orders.
- Responsible for the safe and efficient operation of the truck, ensuring that loads are properly secured and safe for transportation.
- Operates the truck in accordance with all local, state and federal DOT regulations, observing all traffic laws and safety regulations.
- Transports containers to customer locations and to transfer stations.
- Coordinates regularly with the Dispatcher to ensure all stops are picked up, and to receive any special instructions. Checks in with Dispatch prior to completion of route and before returning to the depot.
- Obtain load weight tickets and sign for loads.
- Maintains any related records required, i.e. driver's log, route sheets, work orders, special request work, missed pick up logs, etc.
- Coordinates with Route Supervisor regarding any pick up that is of questionable material, hazardous materials, overweight or oversized items.
- Cleans truck daily to ensure the vehicle meets company expectations to include inside the cab, and ensuring that no trash remains in the truck body after completion of the route.
- Performs daily pre-trip and post-trip inspections as outlined in the pre and post trip vehicle condition report. Reports any maintenance issues on the vehicle condition report and reports it immediately to the route supervisor or operations manager.
- May be required to drive other vehicles for which properly trained and qualified.
- Immediately reports to the company any accident, traffic violation, or license suspension.
- Other duties as assigned from time to time by route supervisors or company management.
- A valid PA Driver's License with a clean driving history.
- Must meet all required DOT physical and medical requirements if required (CDL), and pass a substance abuse screening. As a safety sensitive employee, may be subject to random substance abuse screening under DOT or company policy.
- Some mechanical ability and knowledge of tools and repairs
- Ability to effectively deal with customers and co-workers.
- Requires a high degree of attention and considerable dexterity in the control of the vehicle to prevent damage to truck, equipment, or surrounding items.
- Ability to sit in the cab of the truck for long periods.
- Able to bend, stoop, and climb into and out of the vehicle and body unassisted.
- Ability to lift 75 pounds.
