Simulation Engineer, Automated Driving & ADAS

Palo Alto, CA / Product & Technology - AD/ADAS / Employee / hybrid

Woven by Toyota is the mobility technology subsidiary of Toyota Motor Corporation. Our mission is to deliver safe, intelligent, human-centered mobility for all. Through our Arene mobility software platform, safety-first automated driving technology and Toyota Woven City — our test course for advanced mobility — we’re bringing greater freedom, safety and happiness to people and society.

Our unique global culture weaves modern Silicon Valley innovation and time-tested Japanese quality craftsmanship. We leverage these complementary strengths to amplify the capabilities of drivers, foster happiness, and elevate well-being.

TEAM

The Automated Driving & ADAS organization focuses on developing a scalable, data-driven approach to autonomous and assisted driving software. We collaborate with partners across Toyota, offering numerous opportunities to integrate cutting-edge technology into consumer vehicles globally. To continuously improve and thoroughly test our driving systems, we build powerful developer workflows that leverage real-world data and state of the art in-house and third party simulation technologies. The simulation technologies we develop and integrate form the foundation of our virtual verification and validation efforts, enabling autonomy and ADAS stack development, regression testing, and model training.

WHO ARE WE LOOKING FOR?

The Simulation Core team is seeking an experienced Simulation Engineer with a strong background in developing engines, frameworks and client APIs in Rust or C++, as well as Python. They will help develop simulation software with portability, modularity, and reusability in mind in order to meet the diverse needs of vehicular technology development and testing across Toyota programs. By expanding our simulation capabilities, collaborating with cross-functional teams, and constantly deepening your knowledge of simulation technologies, you will play a key role in boosting developer velocity and improving our ability to catch software issues early in simulation.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Develop our next generation core simulation technologies (e.g. world engine, runtime, scheduler, interfaces, agent frameworks, plugin frameworks).
  • Support the integration of core simulation technologies into solutions or workflows.
  • Work closely with cloud and simulation data analytics engineers to implement the interfaces, configuration, and logging needed to further scale up simulations.
  • Partner with ADAS autonomy, integration, and release teams to improve validation of ADAS software.
  • Demonstrate good design practices; alignment with stakeholders before, during, and after implementation is essential.
  • Be on the lookout for opportunities to improve user workflows with the tooling you build.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor's in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field highly preferred.
  • 3+ years of relevant work experience.
  • Proven track record crafting well-designed, impactful solutions within allotted time and resource constraints.
  • Strong programming skills in Rust or C++.
  • Strong programming skills in Python.
  • Ability to think, design, and code for both the user’s and simulator developer’s perspective.
  • An infectious self-driven passion for solving complex problems while learning new techniques and technologies!

NICE TO HAVES

  • Experience with building real-time systems (a requirement of simulations for driver assistance and hardware in the loop scenarios).
  • Knowledge of one or more cloud compute platforms, such as AWS.
  • Experience with container technologies like Docker and container management systems like Kubernetes.
  • Experience with build systems, continuous integration, and/or continuous deployment (CI/CD).
  • Experience in the automotive and/or self-driving autonomy domain.
