Essential Job Functions

Performs responsible and skilled work in transporting students to and from school and other school-sponsored activities; performs work under general supervision without specific instructions.

Safely operates all types of school buses; maintains a regular schedule for picking up authorized staff and students and delivering them to schools according to schedule.

Makes daily safety inspection of vehicle and equipment; ensures that vehicle is regularly maintained and keeps the vehicle clean, properly heated and ventilated.

Assists students on to or out of the vehicle; enforces safety and conduct regulations.

Maintains records and prepares required reports.

Makes reports to school officials concerning student disciplinary actions, incidents or injuries.

Participates and successfully passes all training required by state and federal law, and by School Board policies, regulations and procedures.

Provides basic first aid and/or prescribed health care as necessary for students.

Performs other related duties as assigned.

Report Preparation:

Completes and submits monthly and weekly reports that include, but are not limited to, pre-trip inspection forms, mileage, student attendance, long and short route forms, maintenance defect reports, student conduct referrals, vandalism and injury reports and other reports submitted periodically, or as needed.

Equipment Operation:

Daily use and operation of a school bus and equipment for fueling the bus.

Contacts:

Transportation supervisor, coordinators and office manager-daily regarding revisions to routes and stops, or student changes. Police, fire or rescue personnel, school administrators, teachers, parents or other student transportation personnel–periodically regarding incidents, accidents or at the direction of the supervisor.

Work Direction:

Provides direction to school bus attendants, who are assigned to the bus and have responsibility for a particular student, receive work direction from the bus driver.

Makes independent decisions as needed to transport students; makes decisions within the guidelines of the school division’s Code of Conduct related to inappropriate student behavior.

Physical Demands:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit, talk, hear, use hands to finger, handle or feel objects, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl; reach with hands and arms, stand, walk and smell. The employee must occasionally lift or move up to 40 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.

Work Environment:

The employee regularly performs work in a moving vehicle and is exposed to outside weather conditions. The noise level in the work environment is moderate to loud and the employee is exposed to environmental and health factors associated with transporting students and driving a large vehicle.

Qualifications

Working knowledge of state and local school bus operation, laws and regulations and county geography.

Working knowledge of first aid procedures including CPR.

Demonstrated ability to operate a large vehicle safely and punctually in all weather conditions, using safe and defensive driving methods.

Demonstrated ability to maintain bus discipline and relate well to children, parents and staff and to provide constant attention and assistance to a number of children at the same time, including children with special health conditions or disabilities.

Demonstrated ability to perform physical tasks such as lifting children.

Demonstrated ability to give and follow instructions, work well under stressful conditions or emergencies and maintain confidentiality.

Requirements

*Must be at least 21 years of age and at least three years of driving experience, with a driving record that meets the standards of CCPS School Board Policy 5430.

**Successful completion of First Aid and CPR courses; auto-injectable epinephrine training (EpiPen) and Defensive Driving Course;

*Meet physical qualifications for school bus drivers;

**Successful completion of state-approved school bus driver training course and FBI fingerprint background investigation.

**Valid Commercial Driver's License. This position requires the incumbent to drive. In accordance with Policy 5431, an employee who occupies the position and is assigned a district-owned or leased motor vehicle will be subject to annual driving checks and must maintain acceptable records pursuant to the standards set forth in the policy.
