Position SummaryThe Heavy Truck Driver is a part of the Road and Bridge team. This team is responsible for construction and maintenance of roads and bridges in the county that are not part of the state highway system or with a municipality. The role performs skilled duties associated with the operation of trucks and repair, maintenance and construction of County roads, bridges and right-of-ways; operates heavy equipment incidental to the work.Essential FunctionsHauls gravel and asphalt in trailer dump truck, performs road maintenance or construction related duties while operating equipment. Transports equipment and suppliesInspects specialty vehicles and heavy equipment for proper operating condition; performs preventive maintenance as needed.Maintains and controls traffic at work siteEnforces rules and regulations according to DOT guidelines; reports unsafe acts, conditions, accidents and injuriesOccasional operation of motor graders, brooms, loaders, backhoes, skidsteers, tractors, mowers, dump trucks, or similar equipment.Patch potholes, fill road washouts and clean storm drains. Install and clean culverts.Meets with foreman for scheduling and assignmentsHelps bridge crew when neededOperates heavy equipment and machinery by using front-end loader, motor grader, back hoe, brush cutter, tractor w/shredder, chipper, distributor truck. Removes brush and weeds from roadsides. Repairs pot holes and other road constructionRegular attendance and timeliness are requiredMinimum RequirementsEDUCATION: Required:High School Diploma or GEDor 4 years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experienceSKILLS EXPERIENCE: RequiredA valid Texas CDL-Class A license and a good driving record.Working knowledge of road construction procedures and practices: knowledge of DOT guidelines.Ability to make independent decisions, communicate effectively and appropriately with employees and general publicPreferred:One (1) year experience driving a tractor / dump-trailer combination.Three (3) years of stable work experienceExperience operating heavy equipmentSupplemental InformationDISCLAIMER: McLennan County will conduct background checks on new hires that will include a criminal background check related to convictions and deferred adjudications in the past ten years and may include credit reports, motor vehicle records, employment records, and educational attainment. Some incumbents may have contact with buried electric, phone, or television cable lines. This position follows DOT guidelines.PHYSICAL DEMAND REQUIREMENTS:While performing the duties of this position, the incumbent is regularly required to stoop, bend, push and pull. May have to lift heavy boxes or objects up to 100 pounds. May be exposed to hazardous chemicals. Exposure to extreme heat and cold.Ability to see and hear hazards associated with the operation of construction equipment.Other physical efforts as required.HOURS / SPECIAL CONDITIONS: This position may be required to work a flexible schedule based on the needs of the department.
