The Motor Coach Driver is responsible for safely operating 35-foot motor coach bus carrying up to 40 passengers within the United States. Often trips will be outside of the state of Virginia and extend for multiple days. During all trips the operator is responsible for the safety and well-being of the passengers as well as the State-owned motor coach bus. The operator must know, understand, and comply with all Federal Motor Carrier Regulations for hours of service, fit for duty, and vehicle inspections. During the summer season Motor Coach drivers will be given the opportunity to work for other departments within the Facilities Management Division, such as Maintenance, Custodial, Design & Renovations, and the Grounds Department. This is to provide work during this time of the year where work in the transit department is slow or comes to a halt. The Motor Coach driver will be responsible for performing and completing general tasks. These requirements apply to both part time and full-time employees. Bus Drivers may be called upon to drive intra- and inter-state, on assignments with durations ranging from a minimum of five hours to multi-day trips. Bus Drivers may be assigned to charter, contract, or scheduled runs. Also, will perform tasks in dispatch department assisting safety manager and dispatch manager with tasks related to training, logs, scheduling trips and confirming work orders for motor coach operators. Working independently and exercising good judgment and discretion is essential to this job.
Essential Functions and Responsibilities
- As essential personnel: you are expected to be available in the event of school closings, delays, shutdowns, and any emergencies including clean-up required because of severe weather incidents. Performs snow removal activities as assigned. Such as shoveling, salting, etc. Facilities Management Division employees are essential to the overall success of Liberty University and its day-to-day functions, especially during ongoing campus events such as Winter Fest, Orientation, Convocation, Commencement, CFAW, and summer camps amongst other planned and unplanned events throughout the year. Must be available to work scheduled and unscheduled hours as emergency needs arise.
- Reports to work at the required time and performs duties as assigned by the Director of Transit Dept.
- Must be familiar with the standard concepts, practices, and procedures of the Transit Department.
- Responsible for wearing the appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) while completing the job duties and responsibilities of the Transit craft. Including but not limited to; protective eye wear, ear protection, hard hat, gloves, Slip resistant/steel-toed boots, respirators/ masks, reflective safety vests, and sunscreen.
- Operate company vehicles in a safe, legal, and accident-free manner at all times, avoiding unnecessary wear and abuse to the vehicle.
- Actively support policies and procedures. Follow instructions of dispatcher and supervisor, both written and verbal. Maintain a professional appearance and demeanor.
- Interact and communicate with customers, co-workers, management, and the public in a positive, professional manner. Treat everyone with respect and courtesy, and in a manner, which will reflect positively on Liberty University, our customers.
- Ensure the safety and security of customers (and their possessions) associated with the current assignment. Responsibility extends to equipment security when parking and leaving a vehicle unattended, as well as, assorted "secondary" equipment, such as jacks, tire chains, and other equipment.
- Assists passengers while boarding and alighting from company vehicles in a stowing personal belonging aboard company equipment. Load and unload passengers 'luggage and belongings.
- Follows established safety driving procedures and techniques to perform and complete assigned bus routes to ensure that they and all passengers are safe.
- Responsible for performing basic vehicle maintenance such as checking the bus tires, oil, and lights to ensure their vehicle is in good working order, clean and presentable to the public at the start of their shift.
- Relies on experience and judgment to plan and accomplish goals.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
- Remains abreast of existing and emerging technologies, processes, products, services, and leading industry performance benchmarks.

Qualification, Credentials, and Competencies
This position requires a high school diploma or GED. Minimum 2+years of commercial experience required or an equivalent combination of education and experience in the Transit bus driving field. Commercial Driver's License (CDL), Class A or B, with passenger endorsement. Must be able to lift 100 lbs. waist high, 40 lbs. overhead, and carry 70 lbs. up to 150 feet. Certifications obtained while employed by Liberty University at the expense of the employer will be reimbursed back to the University Upon voluntary termination (resignation) for the first 12 months after acquiring it. Must be detailed oriented, possess strong organizational skills and well-developed communications skills.
Employees must be able to effectively communicate both verbally and in writing, with strong organizational and computer skills. Experience in driving buses on fixed routes is preferred. Individuals in this position must be able to lift up to 50+ pounds and perform duties of a transit bus operator in typical Virginia climate. A desire to work with a team to accomplish goals, grow and improve, and understand/follow directions under stressful situations in a calm manner are essential to the job. Employees must be courteous, detail oriented, self-motivated, diligent, and trustworthy. Use of one's personal vehicle (or LU vehicles) is required for travel in the performance of the essential functions of this position. Proof of a valid Virginia driver's license, an acceptable DMV record, and liability insurance is required.
