About the Department

The Department of Transport and Planning brings together key transport, planning, land, precinct and policy functions within a single department to create thriving places and connected communities. Together with its portfolio agencies, it is responsible for planning, building, operating and maintaining Victoria’s transport, planning and land services. Its job is to further integrate the transport network and improve the delivery of services to Victorians for simpler, quicker and safer journeys that connect people and places, and support Victoria’s prosperity and liveability.

The Department is focused on delivering more choice, connections and confidence in our travel, ensuring the transport network and land use is safe, sustainable and integrated, to deliver better services and outcomes.

About the Position

As Head of the Department, the Secretary leads the Department’s agenda to bring key services and functions together to enable Victorian communities to better connect with one another. The Secretary ensures the Department delivers policies, services and reforms across its portfolios, to deliver sustainable projects, engage customers, streamline approval pathways and better realise economic opportunities.

The successful appointee will be responsible for strategic high-level authoritative advice to Ministers, the Premier, departmental executives and key public-sector agency stakeholders on policy, programs and operational matters. The Secretary will also build and leverage partnerships with key stakeholders across the state and Commonwealth governments and within industry, to achieve the desired outcomes in delivery and reform.

About You

The ideal candidate will exemplify resilient leadership qualities, with the proven capability to lead the Department while executing responsibilities effectively. To be eligible you will have an extensive understanding of government priorities, programs and processes, within the context of the Victorian Government’s agenda on policy and program delivery for Victorian communities. You will have extensive senior executive leadership experience either at a state or federal level and a track record of working collaboratively to influence others in the development and delivery of government and organisational objectives. Candidates will have demonstrated capability in leading professionals and delivering complex change, including setting objectives, priorities and managing performance. A priority will be the capability to lead the delivery of major infrastructure, transport, or planning/precinct projects, including through government-delivery authorities.

NOTE: this role is based in Melbourne CBD, Victoria.
