Senior Manager, Safety, Autonomous Mobility & Delivery

About the Role

As the Senior Manager, Safety on the Autonomous Mobility and Delivery team, you will have the opportunity to work on the team that is building the future of autonomous here at Uber. We partner with autonomous vehicle (AV) developers, fleet operators, and cities to connect consumers with autonomous rides and deliveries through the power of Uber's Global Platform.

While our AV partners develop and build the technology necessary to power autonomous vehicles with safety in mind, Uber has also implemented a comprehensive safety program, in which we review potential partners' approaches to safety before they deploy and monitor post-deployment operations on the Uber network across mobility and delivery use cases.

In this specific role, you'll work with our AV partners through onboarding and post-deployment operations to understand their approach to safety and consistently apply the assessment process described in Uber's Safety Guidelines for Autonomous Mobility & Delivery Partners. This role will also involve the development of industry safety standards through AV standards setting organizations with a focus on the standards that complement Uber's own safety program.

What You'll Do

1. Execute a comprehensive and pragmatic safety assessment program for reviewing the approaches to safety of potential AV partners utilizing Uber's Safety Guidelines.
2. Monitor and participate in the development of emerging safety regulations, standards, guidelines, and best practice activities related to autonomous vehicles and provide key insights to Uber's internal stakeholders and AV partners.
3. Participate and support the generation of industry positions, identifying market trends, and monitoring federal research as it relates to AV safety.
4. Collaborate with different functional teams across Uber, including engineering, product management, legal, policy, and communications to provide input to product requirements documents, policies, and procedures on AV safety-related topics.
5. Support engagement with policymakers, regulators, and industry groups to discuss Uber's commitment to autonomous vehicle safety and refine aspects of our approach, always seeking to incorporate and advance the state of the art.
6. Continuously improve our AM&D safety program to help demonstrate our commitment to understandable and appropriate levels of safety for autonomous vehicles on the Uber platform.

Basic Qualifications

1. A minimum of 8 years experience in automotive or transportation system safety.
2. Familiarity with functional safety, operational safety, safety management systems, safety cases, safety-critical software development, and safety data analysis.
3. Experience in understanding transportation safety data sources, extracting insights from data, and summarizing findings/takeaways.
4. Excellent written and verbal communications skills, and the ability to convey complex technical topics succinctly and persuasively.
5. Bachelor's Degree in a technical field such as engineering, mathematics, computer science, or physics.

Preferred Qualifications

1. A minimum of 10 years experience in automotive or transportation system safety.
2. Knowledge of the regulatory landscape relating to the testing and commercial operations of autonomous vehicles in the U.S. and internationally.
3. Experience working with industry standards organizations such as SAE, AVSC, IEEE, and/or ISO to develop standards and best practices related to autonomous vehicles.
4. Experience in establishing or reviewing automotive safety assurance programs, especially related to Automated Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS), Automated Driving Systems (ADS), or other safety-critical transportation systems.
5. Master's Degree in a technical field such as engineering, mathematics, computer science, or physics.

For Pittsburgh, PA-based roles: The base salary range for this role is USD$144,000 per year - USD$160,000 per year. For San Francisco, CA-based roles: The base salary range for this role is USD$180,000 per year - USD$200,000 per year. For Washington, DC-based roles: The base salary range for this role is USD$180,000 per year - USD$200,000 per year. For all US locations, you will be eligible to participate in Uber's bonus program, and may be offered an equity award & other types of compensation. You will also be eligible for various benefits.
