Profile
Bus Driver essential Functions/Process Responsibilities include the following: other duties may be assigned as necessary:
- Operate transit buses safely on prescribed routes as directed. Conduct pre and post trip vehicle inspections and document on appropriate forms.
- Collects/records bus fares, and transfers in accordance with GoDurham Transit procedures.
- Promote exemplary customer service of GoDurham by providing safe, courteous, and dependable service while transporting customers.
- Input information into computer-based equipment such as Automated Vehicle Locator (AVL) Automatic Passenger Counter (APC), fare-box and destination displays (requires touch key entering) as technology exists.
- Able to read and interpret maps and complex schedules and provide route and schedule information to transit customers.
- Assist in the boarding of disable customers who require the aid of accessible vehicles (wheelchairs/scooters) for the purpose of mobility. Involves bending, stopping and twisting while securing belts and straps to ensure the patron and vehicle is tied down in a manner that ensures a safe ride (Ability to push pull wheelchair patrons).
- Operate two-way bus radio system in accordance with the GoDurham established policies and procedures and the Federal Communication Commission (FCC).
- Announce major streets, stops and destinations per ADA regulations.
- Adhere to the uniform application of the Labor Agreement, Performance Code, Safety Procedures and Operational Bulletins.
- Requires prolong sitting while driving/operating transit bus. Includes reaching above head to adjust mirrors and destination signs during pre-trip inspections
- Must possess and maintain a Commercial Class "A" or "B" CDL Driver's License with Passenger Endorsement.
- Driver's history report from Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV), documenting driving record for past three to five years.
- Must be at least 21 years of age. Five years of experience in the operation of a motor vehicle preferred.
- Effective oral and written communication skills, with the ability to effectively communicate with employees at all levels of the organization and the general public.
- As a Bus Driver you must have comprehensive knowledge of GoDurham policies.
- Ability to problem-solve under stressful conditions and tight timelines.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with a diverse population.
- Ability to effectively manage and resolve customer conflicts.
- Ability to work in a "Team" focused environment and assist other "Team" members achieve their objectives.
Responsibilities as a Bus Driver include:
- Follow all safety regulations and procedures.
- Ensure the bus is clean and presentable at all times.
- Maintain a safe driving record and obey all traffic laws.
- Be familiar with the routes and schedules of the bus system.
- Assist passengers with loading and unloading luggage.
- Provide assistance to passengers with special needs.
- Communicate effectively with passengers and other drivers.
